SESSION—IX - II) BLACK TIP AND INTERNAL NECROSIS DISORDERS OF MANGO

Dr. G.L. Kaul, Dr. R.N. Pal
The Keynote Address on the two important problems affecting mango production in North India was presented by Dr. Sant Ram. His presentation also combined a symposium paper on the same subject. As far as black tip is concerned, he concluded with the help of data collected and observations made from the survey that the emination of toxic fumes, namely, sulphur dioxide and ethylene gases from brick kilns situated near the orchards was the main causal agent. The intensity of damage caused, however, vary with distance and direction of the chimney.

Following recommendations/suggestions were made.

  1. There is need for the survey of the affected orchards, analysis of the gases eminating from the kilns and investigations into the exact mechanism of damage.
  2. Government should be approached to enforce strictly anti-pollution measures prescribed for units releasing toxic gases.
  3. Concentrated areas of mango should be declared as fruit belt and brick kilns should not be allowed to operate in those areas.
  4. Wherever the licences has already been issued, the brick kiln should not be allowed to operate during development of the fruit. Further, the height of chimneys should not be less than 50 feet.

As regards internal necrosis, Dr. Ram proved conclusively with the support of field and lab data that this was quite different from the black tip and was caused primarily in sandy soils due to deficiency of boron. The symptoms, both internal and external of the two maladies, have been fully identified and described. The internal necrosis can be controlled by spray of borax (0.8 per cent) thrice at pea stage of the fruit development. It was recommended that this should be adopted as a regular practice.

Effect of anti-pollution on development of fruits may be studied.
