Pain in the back often occurs in fruit farming. This was found e.g. in a STIGAS enquiry (STIGAS = Netherlands Foundation for Health Care in Farming). Fruit growers come off badly compared with other farming groups. Pain in the back causes temporary complaints at least, but can even end in total incapacity for work. For the fruit grower this implies that he has to engage expensive casual labour or, in the worst case, has to terminate business.

With a proper insight into the operations it is possible to a certain extent to predict whether pain in the back may develop to be a problem or not. A method described in this article will show the criteria by which lifting work can be performed safely. Besides, the method when applied correctly also indicates how the work organization can be improved to prevent problems.
