GENETIC RESSOURCES AND DIVERSIFICATION IN GENUS CYNARA

C. Foury
Origin of genus Cynara is trully mediterranean. Taxonomy of natural species is not clear. The phylogeny of cultivated species is controverted. As a crop, this vegetable is relatively recent (about 1st century). Actually, few cultivars are largely cultivated. Often the cross between species are fertile. The chief advantage of them probably lies in an eventual modification of thermoperiodism. The improvement of structure of cluster has been obtained, but heads are, in this case, too little. Actually, the wild species are not used as source of diseases resistances.

The prospections and studies on wild species request more endeavours.
