PRODUCTIVITY, GROWTH AND LIGHT INTERCEPTION IN THE ISHS PLANTING SYSTEMS TRIAL IN THE NETHERLANDS
An international comparison of several planting systems with 2 apple cultivars was made.
At the Dutch site, a three-row North-Holland system neither intercepted more light nor produced more than a single row or double row at a lower tree density.
A close-planted single row performed better than the three-row system.
Fruit colour and russet were slightly influenced by planting system.
Fruits of the double row and three-row system tended to be larger than of single rows.
Crown volume and trunk girth were not in all cases correlated.
