ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF HDP-DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NETHERLANDS
The Dutch fruit industry has adopted the HDP philosophy for many years already.
Today more than 75% of the apple acreage and 23% of the pear acreage consists of orchards with more than 1600 trees per ha.
This trend towards high densities is still continuing.
It is expected that by 1995 only 5% of the apple and 50% of the pear orchards will have less than 1600 trees per ha.
The circumstances that favoured the HDP introduction and adoption by the growers in the Netherlands will be described. It will be shown that many different factors are influencing the attitude of the growers and of the industry as a whole towards the HDP concept. Besides pure economic aspects like the level of interest, prices of production means etc., also socio-economic aspects like farm-size and -structure, goals of the grower, and also infra-structural aspects are of importance.
