Seedlings of short-day plant Chenopodium rubrum have been cultivated in vitro under controlled environment in flasks closed by different material (cotton-wool, cellulose, cork, rubber, plastic and aluminium foil). Marked differences were found in growth of shoots and in flowering pattern under different type of closing. The experimental data indicate that the inhibition of growth and flowering might be due to decrease of CO2 level and/or increased level of ethylene within the cultivation flask. This was deduced from estimation of ethylene production and/or from experiments with CO2 removal. It is assumed that type of flask closing results in different rate of gas diffusion.
