RECALCITRANT SEED STORAGE BY PARTIAL DESICCATION TECHNIQUE

Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. - Arg.) seeds are classified as recalcitrant seeds (Roberts, 1973). Recalcitrant seeds are normally killed if the moisture content is reduced below some relatively high critical value of 12 – 31% (Roberts, 1973). Even when they are maintained in a moist condition their longevity is relatively short, typically varying from a few weeks to a few months (King and Roberts, 1980). Like many other recalcitrant seeds, Hevea seeds are also killed by freezing temperature (Chin et al., 1981).

At present no method is available for the storage of Hevea seeds beyond six months. Storage of Hevea seeds mixed with moist sawdust in perforated black polythene bags at 7°C can maintain viability up to four months (Ang, 1976). Treatment with polyethylene glycol 1500 improved the storage life of seeds up to six months with 25% germination (Sakhibun, 1981).

An alternative method for long term storage of Hevea seeds is urgently needed for the conservation of Hevea genetic resources. Therefore, in the present study partial desiccation technique was employed with the application of Benlate as a fungicide.
