PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON INBREEDING IN STRAWBERRY FRAGARIA X ANANASSA DUCH.

K. Niemirowicz-Szczytt
In order to obtain some inbred lines of strawberry, 17 varities were self-pollinated but only 10 developed S2 and S3 generations. In these subsequent generations the participation of S1 genotypes decreased considerably. However, the percentage of germinating seeds and seedling viability showed a slightly increased tendency. An average yield per plant in S2 appeared to be much lower than that of the standard Redgauntlet variety. Still, great differences in productivity were observed among individuals. As regards pollen stainability and size S3 progency derived from the same S2 parental form were obviously diversified. It is supposed that sib-crosses or reciprocal recurrent selection would give more viable and homogeneous inbred lines.
