STRAWBERRY BREEDING IN THE NETHERLANDS

At the Institute for Horticultural Plant Breeding (IVT) breeding of strawberries and other small fruits started in 1943. From 1970 breeding has been concentrated on strawberry only and involved all aspects of strawberry culture. The breeding program was divided into three main projects, i.e. the development of varieties for growing outdoors, in glasshouses and everbearing types. Each project demands a special approach and breeding research.

Besides high productivity and better fruit quality much attention is given to disease resistance, by trying to find a good level of field resistance. Combining all the desired characters on a high level in one genotype is still an illusion.

Since strawberry breeding started 22 varieties have been released for different breeding purposes. Some of them were and still are of major importance for commercial growing. The progress in productivity and fruit size of the varieties released is given in Table 2.
