Different plastic materials (75 microns thick) fixed over low tunnels were used to study their influence on earliness and productivity of strawberry plants. Some quality parameters such as fruit size, soluble solids, acidity and firmness were also determined. These experiments were conducted over a period of three years.

In the first year of experiments TP (thermal polythene), PE (clear polythene) and EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) were tried. The best results for earliness were produced by TP (P< 0.01), the improvements being 4 weeks ahead of the begining of commercial picking.

In the second year TP, PE, EVA and PVC (polyvinylchloride) were tried, and PVC produced the greatest improvement in earliness (P< 0.01), being between 4 and 6 weeks.

During the third year TP, EVA and PVC were tried and the best results for earliness were also produced by PVC with different values of significance, the improvements varying between 2 and 4 weeks.

Significant difference were not observed among the materials employed on either productivity on analyzed quality parameters.
