GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF LILIUM IN ITALY
With the purpose of obtaining Lilium selections suitable for Italian conditions, 76 varieties, most of them belonging to the "Asiatic Hybrids" division, were tested by means of a "diallelic (partial and incomplete)" crossing design.
The following characters were observed:
- - number of flowering plants after one year of cultivation
- - days required to flower (from bulbs)
- - number of flowers per stem
- - plants size
Of the 410 combinations of crosses carried out, only 69 families with a suitable size were considered. The 36 parents of these progenies appear interesting not only for their fertility but also for the large variability shown in the studied characters.
