CLONAL PROPAGATION OF QUEEN AND SMOOTH CAYENNE PINEAPPLES

M. Fitchet
A system for the in vitro multiplication of Queen and Smooth Cayenne pineapple cultivars and subsequent dissemination of tissue-cultured plantlets has been established. Lateral buds from the crowns of pineapple fruit were sterilised in 0,2 % NaOCl and incubated on Murashige and Tucker (MT) medium with 3 % sucrose and NAA, IBA and K (2 mg/l each). Medium consistency and cytokinin type were evaluated for shoot multiplication. Routinely plantlets were multiplied in liquid MT medium with 2 mg/l each of NAA and K. Plantlets were rooted on MT medium with 1 mg/l NAA and 500 mg/l malt extract. Rooted plantlets were immersed in a benomyl solution (2 g/l) overnight and packed in plastic bags containing a strip of cotton wool saturated with benomyl. On arrival at their destination, plantlets could be successfully re-established into soil under glass-house conditions.
