Mulch has been used for many years already and is applied all over the world for various reasons.

The latest kinds, "the industrial mulch", to which attention is paid, are: paper, plastic film, a combination of those both materials, and asphaltic or bituminous products, which can be laid in a liquid way. All kinds of mulch influence the water balance of the soil and with that the soil temperature. The soil structure is also influenced, since rain and wind do not fall directly to the ground.

Moreover, the mulch intercepts the radiation energy of the sun. Dependent on the light transmission, colour or reflection value, the soil temperature reacts upon different ways. These factors also influence the micro-climate above the mulch.

As many kinds of mulch are used on many types of soil under varied climate conditions, it is useful to compare the results of experiments and the experiences for various applications.
