INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION BETWEEN VIGNA RADIATA (L) WILCZEK AND V. MUAGO (L.) HAPPER

Vigna radiata and V. mungo were crossed to transfer genes for mungbean yellow mosaic virus resistance. Viable seeds were produced only in the V. radiata and V. mungo combination. The mixture of GA3, NAA and kinetin was used to prevent pod abscission and to enhance pod development containing hybrid seeds. The FI resulting from the cross seeds were raised in the culture tubes containing ½ MS medium. The FI plants were partially fertile and produced a few pods containing 1–4 seeds/pod. The F2 plants showed moderate resistance to mungbean yellow mosaic virus under field condition.
