IDENTIFICATION OF BER (ZIZYPHUS MAURITIANA LAMK.) CULTIVARS THROUGH VEGETATIVE AND FRUIT CHARACTERS
Keys for classification of ber cultivars were made on the basis of 10 years of observations in the Department of Horticulture, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Leaf apex was the most dependable character for classification of cultivars through vegetative characters. Twenty four cultivars were classified with sub-acute to acute apex and eighteen with obtuse apex. Branching habit was another good index and twenty-one cultivars were grouped on spreading branching habit and twenty-one on semi-erect to erect branching habit. Leaf shape, leaf base, leaf colour and petiole length were used as tertiary characters. Fruit characters used in identification are divided into four groups: (i) fruit with a distinctly pointed apex, (ii) fruit with a slightly pointed apex, (iii) fruit with a round apex, and (iv) fruit apex round with a depression. The most commonly found fruit shapes are oval and round. Four cultivars of Sanaur selections, 'Laddu', 'Noki', 'Mirchia' and 'Katha Bombay' have characterstic beak shapes. The obovate shape is found only in the ZG-2 and ZG-3 cultivars. The fruit of 23 cultivars have both stalk and stylar flesh cavities. Both flesh cavities are absent in 'Selected Safeda', 'Illaichi', 'Nalagarh', 'Umran', 'Katha Bombay' and 'Golar' cultivars. Fruit base, fruit colour at maturity, ridges on the fruit base, and apex and fruit surface are used as tertiary characters.
