SCHEME FOR RAPID CLONAL PROPAGATION OF CICHORIUM INTYBUS L. THROUGH NODULE CULTURE

S. Piéron, M. Belaizi, Ph. Boxus
Shoot meristems from 20 elite clones selected during hydroponic cultures, were excised and cultivated on basal Quoirin-Lepoivre medium supplemented with BAP (0.05 mg/l) and GA3 (0.1 mg/l).

Nodules were directly induced from leaves of each of the micropropagated clones on Quoirin-Lepoivre medium supplemented with IBA (0.1 mg/l) and BAP (0.1 mg/l) and were able to regenerate shoots on this medium.

Nodule germination was improved after transfer of isolated nodules either onto free hormone medium, or directly into the greenhouse. Plantlets from nodule cultures were rooted and transferred to the field, for forcing in hydroponic conditions, to examine true to type behaviour.

The high potential for multiplication and regeneration of these nodules offers new perspectives in breeding programmes, owing to a rapid and automated propagation of selected chicory genotypes.
