RICE-CHAFF AND SOIL COMPOSITE AS A CULTURE MEDIUM FOR VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS

K. Ozawa, M. Yamamura, M. Okada
We have developed a light weight culture medium to reduce grower's muscular labor. The new medium consists of mainly both rice-chaff and soil. To prevent the quick run-off of fertilizer elements the long-life-coat fertilizer NUTRICOTE and charcoal powder were applied. There was no difference in the yields of eggplant seedlings grown between in new medium and conventional soil medium. The weight of the new medium was only 36% of that of conventional soil medium even after water supplied.
