QUALITY STANDARDIZATION OF THAI RAMBUTAN, NAPHELIUM LAPPACEUM L.
Quality standardization of two commercial varieties of Thai rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.), namely Rong-rien and Seechompoo was set up. Quantitative data on fruit size, fruit shape and dimension, fruit weight, as well as defects due to various cases were taken. Panel test was set up to determine the qualitative data as taste and texture. All data were computed statistically using percentile and regression analysis. The results indicated that thickness and weight of aril, skin thickness, and also skin weight are variable due to size and weight of the fruit. The set up of quality standardization could then relied on fruit size or fruit weight per kilogram in coupled with other specifications. The standard could be categorized into Extra, Class I, and Class II. The drafted standard was submitted to representatives of relevant group for comments and approval. Promising groups of growers adopted the set up standard and its practical in terms of production providing that appropriate techniques being practized. Future development as legislation and enforcement is required.
