THE PROTECTION OF WILD BULBS AND THE PROPAGATION OF SPECIALTY BULBS IN TURKEY

Robert J. Bogers, Paul J. van Leeuwen
Growing concern among nature conservation organizations about the risk of extinction of certain bulb species by collecting bulbs or by the destruction of their habitats has led to an agreement between these organizations and Dutch and Turkish bulb growers and exporters and research institutes on three main points:
  • labelling of all bulbs sold by Dutch companies as to their origin ('from wild source' or 'from cultivated stock');
  • monitoring of Galanthus imports into The Netherlands;
  • the establishment of a joint propagation project in Turkey in order to replace collecting 'from the wild' by growing bulbs 'from cultivated stock'.

The present state of these three activities will be presented.
