MODELLING THE COASTAL EFFECT ON GREENHOUSE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS IN THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands have a long tradition of reclaiming land from the sea. A 2 km wide land reclamation project is planned between Den Haag (The Hague) and Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland). The area right behind the coast between the cities mentioned, called "The Westland", is the largest greenhouse district (3550 ha in 1988) in The Netherlands. The growers have objected to this plan because they fear loosing their "special" coastal climate advantages. To investigate this problem, measurements and energy calculations over a two year period have been made.

Calculations show that the energy requirements in "The Westland" area will be about 2 % lower for the area between 0 – 5.2 km from the coast (1875 ha greenhouses) and 0.8 % lower for the area between 0 –13 km. The yield for the area 0 – 13 km will be reduced by 0.6 % due to the reduction of global radiation.
