Pollen studies in Gloriosa superba Linn. revealed that pollen grains were oval in shape and pollen fertility in Acetocarmine stain was 96.5%. Pollen grains remained viable for about 14 hrs after dehiscence. Germination was maximum in 10% sucrose solution (98.61%). Pollen tubes grew to a length of 14.24 μm (micrometre) per hr in distilled water and fruit set was 90% under artificial cross pollination, 100% under artificial self pollination but only 40% under open pollination indicating that inadequate pollination is the main reason for poor fruit set in this corp.
