MEDICINAL PLANTS SOLD IN BRAZZAVILLEMARKETS (CONGO)

A. DIAFOUKA, M. BITSINDOU
An inventory of the common medicinal plants traded in Brazzaville markets was carried out over a period of one year (Feb 1991-Jan 1992). 51 plants species were recorded, they are used to treat many diseases.

For the species in greatest demand, availability has been analysed and the parts of the plants used has been noted. The dense forest plants were the subject of particular study: for example, Ongokea gore whose stembark is used to treat splenomegaly, has disappeared from the area around Brazzaville, due to the destruction of the rain forest and it is now necessary to collect it from Bangou forest 200 kms from Brazzaville.
