EFFECTIVENESS OF GINKGO-BILOBA SPECIAL-EXTRACT IN PATIENTS AFTER SUBARACHNOID HEMORRHAGE AND ANEURYSM SURGERY SUFFERING FROM CEREBRAL INSUFFICIENCY
Subarachnoid hemorrhage from a ruptured aneurysm often results not only in neurological deficits, but also in important cognitive irritations in spite of a favorable spontaneous development. In a placebo-controlled double-blind study the effectiveness of the Ginkgo-biloba Special-extract (KaveriR, Lichtwer Pharma, Berlin) should be examined. 50 out patients, 7–42 months after aneurysm surgery, were examined for 12 weeks using the following tests: Examination of the attention with the Zimmermann-Test-Battery, Freiburg, examination of the short term memory on verbal and non-verbal level. Results: Significant reduction of reaction time on stimulus. The number of errors was reduced significantly in the active treatment group by 65 % in comparison to the placebo group with 2 %. A significant improvement of the verbal short term memory, selective attention and stability/flexibility of attention was shown in the active treatment group in comparison to the placebo-group. Therefore therapeutical-medicinal actions should be started early to improve the cognitive performance in this group of patients.
