PHARMACOLOGICALLY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN PLANT TISSUE CULTURE OF MAYTENUS ILICIFOLIA (CELASTRACEAE)

Plant tissue culture has been considered as a useful tool to get as much as possible from plants that produce pharmacologically active compounds.

Numerous studies have been done concerning the phytochemistry of plants of Maytenus genus and their related biological activities.

In this work, callus cultures have been initiated from selected matrices of Maytenus ilicifolia and the effects of exogenously applied plant growth regulators on biomass production and formation of metabolites as triterpene derivatives, active as anti-gastric ulcer agents are reported.

Furthermore organogenesis systems resulting in root formation have been established to study accumulation of compounds of interest.

Genetic improvements using Agrobacterium as a vector are under development to enhance production of triterpenes.
