N. VERLET
A global presentation of the herb economy is often too general to be really informative. Nevertheless, several factors have to be taken into account for a better understanding of the current situation. The demand depends, in fine, on the consumer behaviour. Other factors interfere with the market and the price determination : economic growth, health regulation, international standards, regulation on natural products … Market changes occur rapidely, affecting individual plants, or industrial processes. The data available allow to present an estimation of the world essential oils production and trade. Numerous programmes for the development of essential oils have been planned throughout the world, often initiated by governmental or international organizations. Progress have been very variable and an in-depth analysis of the success or failures is particularly important.
