COMMERCIALIZATION OF AROMATIC PLANTS IN GREECE. AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE PRESENT SITUATION AND ASPECTS FOR THE FUTURE TRENDS

P.E. Kaldis, C.L. Papageorgiou, A. Nikolaidis
Recent decades have seen an effort to expand the cultivation of aromatic plants in Greece, where, previously, only naturally grown quantities were reaching the domestic and foreign markets. The interest in aromatic/medicinal plants was revived in recent years in the search for alternatives to less-marketable products produced in less - favoured areas.

This paper attempts to present an analysis of the production and market situation of aromatic and medicinal plants by combining systematic and scattered information. The evolution of production, the cultivation experiences, the cost structure, the prices obtained, the availability and utilisation of processing installations etc. constitute useful elements for reaching some early conclusions on the economic outlook and the prospects of these products in Greece.
