The plants were cultivated in greenhouses on the Almerian coast and were irrigated with strongly saline, fertilized water.

The correct combination of the fertilization and the quality of the irrigation water with pH=7.8; E.C. (Electrical Conductivity)=3.8 dS/m, and high Cl- (15.26 meq/L) and Na+ (16.5 meq/L) values (indicating their possible saline origin), favours the fruit formation of vegetable species similar to that used in this study.
