DRIP IRRIGATION TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER FOR THE GREENHOUSE INDUSTRY IN ALMERIA (SPAIN)

J. López-Gálvez, N. Castilla, F. Orgaz, E. Fereres
The horticultural production in unheated, plastic greenhouses has expanded in the last two decades in many parts of the world with a mild climate. This intensive horticultural production system occupy in the Almeria province over 15,000 ha in 1992. The scarcity of growndwater, major source of irrigation water in the area, led to a moratorium on new developments, generating increasing interest in the water use efficiency improvement. Research efforts have concentrated on determining crop water requirements and on drip irrigation evaluation and management. These studies generated guidelines that were widely spread among the growers that had adopted the drip irrigation technology, over 90% of the area in 1992.
