ASSESSMENT OF FLUCTUATIONS IN WATER AND AIR CONTENTS OF POT SUBSTRATES DURING PLANT GROWTH

A method for assessing the bulk density and the existing content of water and air in pot substrates during plant growth is described. By this method the fluctuations in water and air contents between irrigations can be quantified. The usefulness of the method is illustrated by selected results from an experiment with the pot plant Exacum affine grown in peat substrates. Pots without plants are also considered.
