IN VITRO SCREENING OF STRAWBERRY PLANT AND ROOT CULTURES FOR RESISTANCE TO PHYTOPHTHORA FRAGARIAE AND P. CACTORUM

J.L. Maas, L. Zhong, G.J. Galletta
We investigated the potential use of Phytophthora fragariae Hickman and P. cactorum (Leb. & Cohn) Schroct culture filtrates for in vitro selection of resistant strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) variants. Toxins produced by cach fungus induced wilting of tomato and strawberry seedlings. Toxins also reduced proliferation rates of strawberry root pieces in vitro. The potential of these methods evaluation of strawberry variants for resistance appears promising.
