INTERGENERIC HYBRIDS OF FRAGARIA AND POTENTILLA

A. J. Sayegh, M. J. Hennerty
Intergeneric hybridization between eleven different cultivars of Fragaria X ananassa Duch. (octoploid strawberry, n=7) and Potentilla fruticosa (diploid, n=7) was conducted out of season using forced plants. An original 1001 embryos were rescued and gave rise to 154 in vitro plants. Fifty five of these were weaned to autotrophic conditions. Cytological examination of root pieces from 50 different plants revealed 43 hybrids, 2 haploids and 3 aneuploids. Differences in leaf morphology could be used as an early identifying characteristic for haploids, hybrids and aneuploids.
