‘Gardena’, ‘Cortina’ and ‘Sella’ were originated from a cross between ‘Addie’ and ‘Pajaro’ and were selected in 1985 in the fields of the C.I.V. in Ferrara. The principal traits of the three varieties are described.

‘Gardena’ is a medium vigour, low density, and upright growing plant, highly productive, and has dark green leaves. Flowering at the same level of the leaves, flowers have a medium corolla, rounded-elliptical and superimposed petals. The blossoming season is early. Fruit are medium-big, prevalently heart-shaped, regular, with a pointed apex. Big calyx, the sepals are meduim, taken off the fruit and difficult to remove. The surface shows a deep bright red color. Achenes are under the surface. The pulp is red-orange showing a very high aromatic firmness with a medium sweetness and cosiderable acidity. Medium internal hollow. Harvest time is 2 days less than ‘Addie’.

‘Cortina’ plants have medium vigour and tillering, a middle growthform. The leaves show a medium green color; high productivity. Flower: at the same foliage level, it shows a medium corolla with rounded petals. Blossoming season: early. Fruit: medium-big, heart-shaped, regular with a pointed apex. Big calyx with medium sepals slightly bent and taken off the fruit. The surface shows an intense bright homogeneous red. The achenes are under the surface. The pulp is red-orange, very firm, with a good flavour, medium sweetness and acidity. Medium hollow. Harvest time as ‘Addie’.

‘Sella’ plants are vigorous with medium tillering, a middle growthform, with leaves showing a medium green colour, high productivity. Flower: at the same foliage level, it shows a big corolla, with rounded-elliptical and superimposed petals. Blossoming season: medium. Fruit: big, heart-shaped, with pointed apex. Big calyx, with medium slightly bent sepals. The surface shows an intense, bright, homogeneous red colour. The achenes are under the surface. The pulp is red-orange, very firm, with a good flavour, medium sweetness and acidity. Medium hollow. Harvest time: 4 days more than Addie.
