ADAPTABILITY OF THE VARIETY MARMOLADA (R) TO DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES FOR OUT OF SEASON PRODUCTION
The variety ‘Marmolada’ (R) was obtained from a cross between ‘Gorella’ and a selection, N 15. It is characterized by a very high productivity, with fruit of big size, regular conical shape with an attractive brilliant red colour. A very interesting trait is a strong biflowering habit. Different techniques were tried and developed to exploit the possibility to use these characters for good productions of ‘Marmolada’ (R) out of season. 1) Spring and summer production: This technique in protected cultivation was developed in Cesena (Italy). After the regular production is spring (May), a second production in July was obtained with good quality fruit. In Switzerland, at Delaloye Farm, the spring production of ‘Marmolada’ (R) was 45.6 t/ha, compared to the 28.9 of ‘Elvira’ and the 21.5 ‘Elsanta’. ‘Marmolada’ (R) produced another 13.2 t/ha in summer, reaching a total production of 58.9 t/ha. 2) Fall and spring production: This technique is mainly used in plastic-house cultivation in Verona, with varieties such as a ‘Gorella’, ‘Chandler’, and ‘Elsanta’, ‘Marmolada’ (R) proved to be very suitable for this kind of culture giving productions of 10 t/ha in Fall and 40–45 t/ha in Spring. 3) Waiting bed: With this technique, waiting bed plants of ‘Marmolada’ transplanted under tunnel at the beginning of February started the production middle of April and produced 350–400 g/plant, with very good quality fruits. Trials are being carried out in different locations and in different periods. 4) Hydroponic production: ‘Marmolada’ has been tested in hydroponic cultivation in Holland and Belgium. The productivity was about 30% higher that ‘Elsanta’. Another interesting feature is that the fruits are borne on long stalks, making the harvest easier. In conclusion, ‘Marmolada’ proved to be very flexible and suitable to be used for productions out of season, giving high yield and good quality fruits.
