THE ROLE OF CULLULASE IN THE ABSCISSION OF CITRUS LEAVES AND FRUITS IN RELATION TO EXOGENOUS TREATMENTS WITH GROWTH REGULATORS

A comparative study of abscission in explants of citrus leaves and young and mature fruits showed that increase in cellulase activity precedes separation in all cases. The rise in enzyme activity and the separation are delayed by auxins and enhanced by ethylene. It is suggested that cellulase plays an important role in late abscission stages by affecting cell-wall degradation. The possibility that other enzymes are involved at the very early stages of abscission, especially of mature fruits, is discussed.
