EFFECTS OF GROWTH REGULATORS ON THE STORAGE LIFE OF APPLES AND PEARS
Hormonal and growth regulator sprays may affect both the ripening and subsequent storage behaviour of pome fruits. Materials such as 2, 4, 5-TP, NAA and CEPA may promote the onset of the respiration climacteric, fruit softening and certain colour and maturity changes, whereas GA, MH and SADH may delay certain characteristics of the ripening process. Although SADH may cause an increase in the incidence of certain physiological disorders in a number of cultivars, in others, its beneficial effects on fruit firmness are maintained throughout storage. Auxins and related compounds have been found to influence the movement of nutrients between shoots and apple fruits and thereby reduce susceptibility to bitter pit. On the other hand tri-iodobenzoic acid (TIBA) promotes the incidence of this disorder. The interaction of growth regulators and natural fruit hormones and the possible practical applications of these findings are discussed.
