FRUIT QUALITY IN CITRUS AND THE EFFECT OF GROWTH REGULATORS

Growth regulators which have been used until now to improve citrus fruit quality act mainly on fruit size and peel properties. Substituted phenoxy compounds control fruit size directly and/or by partial thinning. Gibberellin applied at different seasons may help to increase peel viability and to decrease peel disorders, as rind staining, creasing, etc., but delays colour development. Ethephon (evolving ethylene) may become a pre-harvest surrogate for post-harvest ethylene degreening, when needed. Some peculiarities of citrus fruit reactions to growth regulators are discussed.
