The employ of different types of wire nets with girdling effect to promote rooting in hazelnut stool layers was compared with the manual girdling of the shoots with iron wire.

The following types of nets were tested:

  • galvanized, electro-welded iron net with 8 x 8 mm mesh
  • galvanized, woven iron net with 6 x 6 mm mesh
  • galvanized, woven iron net with 8 x 8 mm mesh
  • plastic net with 8 x 8 mm mesh.

The electro-welded net with 8 x 8 mm mesh promoted the best rooting. The woven nets and the plastic net were less effective because of the deformation of the wires following the growth of the shoots.

With regard to the time needed for the whole stool layering the net system proved to be three time quicker than the manual girdling.
