COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT TRAINING SYSTEMS ON HAZELNUT

J. Tous, A. Romero, M. Rovira, J. Clavé
The improving of the productivity of hazelnut orchards using new training systems was studied during four years (1988–1991). Two irrigated trials, grouping four shape systems, were observed in Tarragona: "free vase", "monocone", "ipsilon" and "hedge row". The analysed cultivars were chosen according to their tree vigor: "Negret", "Tonda Romana", "Pauetet" and "Gironell", in increasing size order.

Preliminary results show that: "hedge row" is the system that starts to crop earliest, although it also gives the highest suckers emission; "free vase" provides the best vegetative growth; "monocone" is not suitable for the less vigorous cultivars, and "ipsilon" gives good shoots and is easy to train, thus it can be interesting for future new orchards.
