Hazelnut cultivation is widely spread in the Piedmontese hilly area called "Alta Langa". This area is characterized by low summer rains and high air temperature and during the last years this situation was particularly enhanced and unfavourable for vegetative and productive aspects in hazelnut cultivation.

Effects of irrigation at two different levels of ETP, compared with no-irrigation, are consequently still subject to testing and a method for managing and planning the irrigation has been set.

A daily field water balance was made to define the best moment for irrigation and the necessary water volume. The balance has been calculated considering meteorological data (rains and evaporation), hydropedological parameters of the soil, irrigation system characteristics, planting distances and plant age.

In order to obtain a water balance in real time, the Videotel SIP service (irrigation project) planned by the Consorzio della Bonifica Renana was used. It consists of a computerized model for the calculation of concatenated field water balance; the model is made up of the above listed parameters and it is possible to bring it up to date simply introducing new rain and evaporation data. This represents a benefit because it is possible to obtain quickly information for managing and planning irrigation.

Moreover using this model, results could be spread in real time to a wide number of this users' service: every interested farmer can have his personal field water balance simply mailing the rain and hydropedological data of his farm to the Consorzio della Bonifica Renana by SIP Videotel terminal.
