CULTIVATION OF CHICORY PLANTS IN HYDROPONICS
The cultivation of chicory heads (chicons) (Cichorium intybus L.) in hydroponics is used in daily practice.
The cultivation of chicory plants in hydroponics is only suitable as a research method.
This method creates the possibility for a complete control of water and nutrient application per root, through monitoring of frequency and duration of fertigation.
In this way it is possible to investigate the influence of the mineral composition of the nutrient solution on the mineral composition, the sugarcontent and the sugar-composition of the chicory root and its suitability to be forced, without the influence of complex soilfactors.
Examples of the relation between the mineral composition of the nutrient solution, the morphology of the chicory plants and the quality and production of the chicory heads are elaborated.
