TWO YEARS OF WATER-MELON CULTIVATION IN SOILLESS CULTURE

R. GRUDINA, N. FADDA, F. CHESSA, S. LEONI
The experiment was aimed at testing the adaptability of water-melons to greenhouse culture in inert substrates, with high density vertical cultivation on nets.

Two experiments were carried out in 1991 and 1992 respectively.

Four cultivars were compared in the first experiment: ROCIO - SUGAR BABY - SUNBABY - TAMMY in two substrates.

Two cultivars were used in the 1992 experiment: NORMA (Sugar Baby type) and MADERA (Crimson type). Moreover, five different nutritional solutions of increasing salinity were confronted. The substrates significantly affected both total production and the number of fruits per plant.

In the second year experiment no significative differences were observed among the solutions tested. The results obtained in the first two years of the experiment have been satisfactory.
