DEVELOPMENT OF A PROGRAM TO CLASSIFY CHARACTERISTICS AND RECOVER THE SAN MARZANO TOMATO

Based upon initial screenings in 1989, studies have been carried out (1,3) comaparing of San Marzano tomatoes picked in the tradional growing area and hybrids proposed to substitute them

In 1990 and 1991 the following werw drawn up:

  • Compare the agronomic qualities of San Marzano strains and some hybrids already used locally;
  • Begin to select better strains of San Marzano tomatoes to obtain both tradionally varieties as well as pure breeds to create hybrids that retain the more typical qualitive features of San Marzano tomatoes.
  • Begin to create hybrids to obtain indications on the affinity of different breeds.
