CONTRIBUTIONS OF TROPICAL ROOT CROPS TO SOCIOECONOMIC IMPROVEMENT OF THE DEVELOPING WORLD

S. Chandra
Tropical root crops play a key role in the world's food supply. These crops are consumed by a third of the world's population, usually comprising the lower socioeconomic groups. One way of improving the welfare of such groups of people is for their national governments to concentrate on policies that utilize the natural advantages of tropical root crops to generate large amounts of cheap food per unit of land or labor input. The challenge for researchers and extension workers is to convince governments and policymakers that investments in tropical root crops have high payoffs and that, in the long-term, these actions will improve socioeconomic conditions in the developing world.
