ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GEOGRAPHICALLY BASED CULTIVAR LIST FOR THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN PREPARATION FOR A GEOGRAPHICALLY BASED CULTIVAR REGISTRATION AUTHORITY
The state of California has a remarkably diverse and unique flora due to the elevational, topographic, geologic, edaphic, and climatic diversity within its borders.
The presence of a mediterranean type climate with its components of hot dry summers and cool wet winters is the primary reason why so many of the fine horticultural selections from the California flora are so little known outside of the state.
Due to the unique flora and climate, it is asserted that a geographically based cultivar registration authority is particularly appropriate.
Preliminary results based upon four years of study on this issue are presented.
