DIRECTORY OF INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION1 AUTHORITIES FOR CULTIVAR NAMES (IRAS)

F. Vrugtman
Since 1956 International Registration Authorities (IRAs) for cultivar names have been established under the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP). The IRAs are appointed by the Council of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and carry out their duties under the guidance of the ISHS Commission for Nomenclature and Registration. EPA appointees are institutions or societies (which ensures continuity), who in turn, appoint a Registrar from their staff or members. A few Registrars have been allowed to continue their registration work after leaving the employ of an institution.

The aim of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants and of cultivar name registration is to promote uniformity, accuracy and fixity in the naming of agricultural, horticultural and silvicultural cultivars, and to avoid confusion and duplication of cultivar names.

The currently valid edition, i.e. International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants-1980, Regnum Vegetabile Volume 104, ISBN 9031304468, is out of print. The Horticultural Taxonomy Group, HorTax for short, is coordinating efforts of updating-and revising the Code. Interested individuals should contact: Horticultural Taxonomy Group c/o The Royal Horticultural Society Wisley Garden Woking, Surrey GU23 6QB United Kingdom.
