EFFECTS OF POSTHARVEST PRETREATMENTS AND PRESERVATIVE SOLUTIONS ON VASE LIFE AND FLOWER QUALITY OF ASIATIC HYBRID LILY

To extend the vase life of cut Asiatic hybrid lily (Lilium x elegans Thunb.), 'Corderia' and 'Avignon', lilies were harvested and pre-treated with 1 mM silver thiosulfate (STS), 1 mM STS + 10% sucrose for 30 minutes, and 0.2 mM STS + 10% sucrose + 100 ppm GA3 + 1 mM MnCI2 for 3 hours. After these pretreatments, cut stems were held in various preservative solutions. Vase life, percentage of flowering, flower diameter, petal length, fresh weight and solution uptake were measured. The proper harvesting stage of lily was the time when the first flower was fully open. Pretreatments of STS + sucrose and STS + sucrose + GA3 + Mn effectively prolonged the vase life and increased flowering percentage of cut lily. The preservative solutions with 150 ppm hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) + 2% sucrose + 50 ppm AgNO3 and. 200 ppm hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC) + 3% sucrose + 50 ppm GA3 significantly extended vase life 1.8 times as compared to the control and improved quality of cut lily significantly as judged by percent flowering, fresh weight, and solution absorption. Buds longer than 4.5 cm developed normally and opened in the above preservative solutions. Soda water was appeared as a good preservative solution for cut lily, but the yellowing of foliage gradually started 6 or 7 days after treatment. The preservative solution of 200 ppm HQC + 3% sucrose + 50 ppm GA3 after pretreatment with 0.2 mM STS + 10% sucrose + 100 ppm GA3 + 1 mM MnCI2 was to keep the green foliage till the end of vase life.
