THE PERSIMMON INDUSTRY AND RESEARCH AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN REPUBLIC OF KOREA.

S. Kang, K. Ko
This paper intends to introduce the current status of fruit industry of Korea in general and the industry and research activities on persimmon in particular. Korea has a long history of persimmon growing, mostly of astringent types; more than 100 local strains or cultivars have been collected and classified. Recently, however, a sweet cultivar of Japanese origin, Fuyu, has predominated and the acreage is increasing. Recent establishment of two experiment stations solely for persimmon research reflects the growing importance of persimmon in Korea. Research activities on persimmon have been considerable. They range from breeding to improvement of cultural practices. Control of vegetative growth, elucidation of nutrient recycling process and improvement of storage techniques have received most attention. Problems associated with the reduction in production cost and the improvement of fruit quality are discussed. The persimmon industry in Korea is not without problems; we are nevertheless optimistic about our future.
