THE OPPORTUNITIES OF USING TOBACCO COMPOST IN STRAWBERRY GROWING

Tobacco residue from the production of cigarettes is available from the Adana factory at the rate of 3–4 t/day which could be used as an alternative bulky organic manure. Farm yard manure (FYM) is an expensive material both to acquire and use where as tobacco waste (TW) is cheap and readily available.

Tobacco waste was composted and prepared for planting with the cultivar Douglas during the summer. FYM was used as the control. The investigation recorded: the earliness, yield/plant and quality of the strawberries.

The results from the two years of cropping suggest that tobacco compost (TC) can be used as an alternative to FYM.
