VIRUSES AND MERISTEM CULTURE OF NERINE

F.A. Hakkaart, D.Z. Maat, F. Quak
Cucumber mosaic virus was isolated from Nerine bowdenii and N.Sarniensis. Electron microscopic preparations contained filamentous viruses. One, apparently belonging to the potato virus S group, was tentatively named Nerine latent virus. Another flexuous virus belongs to the potato virus Y group. A representative of the potato virus X group was detected only in N.sarniensis. No correlation between the presence of particles and virus symptoms could be established.

Meristem culture of symptomless material containing Nerine latent virus produced plantlets in which no elongated virus particles were detected. In seedlings of N. bowdenii such particles were not observed either.
