MORPHOLOGICAL METHODS FOR THE DETECTION OF BANANA OFF-TYPES DURING THE HARDENING PHASE
The appearance of off-types during in vitro multiplication processes is an important drawback for mass propagation of bananas. Commercial production practices include visual screening of the plantlets at the hardening phase in greenhouses to detect putative off-types to be eliminated. This procedure is time-consuming and not completely reliable. We have used multivariate analysis to optimize the procedures for morphological detection of off-types during hardening. The ratios length/width of the lamina and height/perimeter of the plant used in conjunction permitted the detection of all dwarf and giant off-types while causing the misidentification of only 3% of normal plants. This procedure can be used for training of the personnel involved in off-type detection at the nursery stage.
